Everyone who knows is aware of my girly girl, I love designer and everything expensive personality. That does come with being 6'2" considering that the only jeans I can wear are designer brand or $150 Buckle Jeans. But let's not get into my shopping habits and let's focus on an adventure that was way beyond my comfort level. (at least before I went to this store).
Alright, let's stop beating around the bush and let's get to it. I went to a thrift shop. Say what?! Yeah, I couldn't even believe it myself. I had the stereotypical "never go into a thrift shop unless you want to get shot" scenario going through my head the entire way there. Shoot, I was so freaked out, I even dragged my boyfriend along with me. Let me start off by saying A). I still won't buy clothes from this store, but B.) I found a few vintage looking pieces & I've decided to give them a makeover; the first being this TV Tray I bought here at one of the local Austin Thrift stores.
(Already started painting it before I realized I didn't take a before photo which is why the image is partially cut off)
It honestly looked like the nastiest, oldest, good for nothing tv-tray that you'd find lined up as a bed in a shack. BUT, I turned it into this chic turquoise and chalkboard menu that will hang from one of our kitchen walls as a menu listing. Cute, vintage, great edges and just large enough.
Here is what I did.
First, I sanded down the entire tray: side panels, face, knobs, everything. Then I got out my turquoise paint. I applied a good 4 coats just to make sure the color was really that thick heavy feel. I didn't want an reminisce of that yucky white showing.
Then came time for the chalkboard paint. This was the hardest part of the project and was incredibly easy (if that makes sense). It was just time consuming. In total, it took about 2 hours to complete the entire project.
I applied 4 coats of the Martha Stewart standard black chalkboard paint. Worked like a charm. I used a sponge brush so that way I could get into the deep grooves of the wood and around every inside corner.
